What Is NECA? ⚡

You’ve probably heard NECA mentioned around the electrical industry, but what exactly is it?

NECA stands for the National Electrical Contractors Association.

It’s a national trade association representing electrical contractors and supporting the electrical contracting industry through education, training, workforce development, advocacy, business resources, networking, and more.

But there’s an important distinction every electrician should know:

NECA ≠ NEC

NEC = National Electrical Code 📖
NECA = National Electrical Contractors Association 🏢

They’re completely different things.

The NEC is the electrical safety code published by NFPA. NECA is an organization representing electrical contractors and the electrical contracting industry.

So if someone says, “NECA requires this,” they’re talking about an organization — not the National Electrical Code itself.

That distinction might seem small, but knowing the difference between the organizations, standards, codes, and resources you encounter in the trade is part of becoming a better electrician.
