⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Marina Fueling Docks (Part 2 - Article 514) ⚡
Fueling boats on the water introduces unique vapor accumulation risks! How does the NEC classify closed vs. open construction docks under Section 514.5(C)? Let's check it out! 👇
Separating Utilities on Docks:
Piping vs. Wiring: Electrical wiring and equipment located at or serving motor fuel dispensing locations on wharfs, piers, or docks must be installed on the side opposite the liquid piping system.
Classifying Floating Docks and Voids:
Closed Construction Docks: Where floating docks have no space between the bottom and the water (e.g., concrete-enclosed expanded foam), the surface is a Class I, Division 2 location, while below-surface spaces, voids, pits, and fuel piping chases where vapors accumulate are Class I, Division 1.
Open Construction Docks: Built on stringers over pilings or floats, the area 450 mm (18 in.) above the dock surface extending 6 m (20 ft) horizontally from the dispenser down to the water is Class I, Division 2, while pits and enclosures within 6 m are Class I, Division 1.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Unshared dock sections located 20 feet or more away from a fuel dispenser can be classified as Division 2 or even unclassified if documented air spaces are provided to let flammable vapors dissipate safely!
