SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Wiring & Generator Grounding (Part 4 - Article 702) ⚡
Can you run optional standby wires in the same pipe as normal general wiring? How do you properly ground a portable generator? Let's wrap up Article 702! 👇
SLIDE 2 (WIRING FLEXIBILITY) Sharing Raceway Space:
General Wiring Freedom: Under Section 702.10, optional standby system wiring is permitted to occupy the same raceways, cables, boxes, and cabinets with other general wiring.
Note: Just like legally required systems (Article 701), you aren't forced to run entirely independent conduits like you are with emergency systems (Article 700).
SLIDE 3 (PORTABLE GENERATOR GROUNDING) Grounding Rules for Portables:
Separately Derived: If configured as a separately derived system, it must comply with Section 250.30 (bonding the neutral and establishing a grounding electrode system).
Nonseparately Derived: If configured as a nonseparately derived system, the equipment grounding conductor must be bonded to the system grounding electrode.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Under 702.12(B), portable generators rated at 15 kW or less using a flanged cord-and-plug inlet do not require a separate building disconnect as long as the inlet is installed safely on the outside of the structure.
