⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Electrically Driven Irrigation Machines (Part 1 - Cable Specs & Sizing Math) ⚡
Center pivots and linear move irrigation towers span hundreds of feet across agricultural fields. Welcome to Article 675! How does the Code regulate specialized irrigation cable and motor sizing math? Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
Weatherproof Multi-Conductor Assemblies:
Targeted Scope: Covers electrically driven/controlled irrigation machines, branch circuits, controllers, and tower drives. (Note: Water pump motors are covered by standard Article 430 rules).
Cable Construction: Irrigation cable must feature stranded 75°C wet-rated conductors, nonwicking filler, a flame-resistant core, metallic overlay (min 8 mils), and a sunlight-resistant outer jacket (min 50 mils). Supported every 1.2 m (4 ft)!
Accounting for Intermittent Duty:
General Irrigation Machines (675.7(A)):
$\text{Equivalent Continuous Current} = (125\% \times \text{Largest Motor FLA}) + \sum (\text{Remaining Motors FLA} \times \text{Duty Cycle})$
Derating Factor: Signal and control wires in an irrigation cable are exempt from standard ampacity bundle derating under Section 675.5!
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Irrigation cable operates outdoors under extreme sun, mud, and water spray. Standard Tray Cable or UF cable won't cut it—always verify your cable assembly features the mandatory metallic overlay shielding and sunlight-resistant jacket!
