⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Bulk Plant Pumps & Underground Runs (Part 3) ⚡
What are the hazard zones around transfer pumps and tank truck loading racks? How must underground raceways be buried? Let's review Sections 515.5 and 515.8! 👇
Handling Transfer Hazards:
Indoor Pumps & Withdrawal Fittings: Areas within 1.5 m (5 ft) of indoor pumps or bleeders are Class I, Division 2 / Zone 2, extending up to 900 mm (3 ft) above the floor within a 7.5 m (25 ft) horizontal radius. Outdoor pumps feature a tighter 900 mm (3 ft) radius and 450 mm (18 in.) height restriction.
Tank Loading Racks: Loading through open domes creates a Division 1 / Zone 1 space within 900 mm (3 ft) of the dome edge, surrounded by a Division 2 / Zone 2 boundary extending up to 4.5 m (15 ft).
Burial Depth & Rigid Transitions:
Underground Raceways: Underground wiring must be installed in threaded RMC, IMC, or buried under at least 600 mm (2 ft) of cover using PVC conduit, RTRC conduit, or listed cable.
The 2-Foot Rigid Rule: Where PVC or RTRC conduit is used, threaded RMC or IMC must be used for at least the last 600 mm (2 ft) of the run to emergence or aboveground connection.
Cables & Grounding: Buried cables must be enclosed in threaded RMC/IMC from the lowest buried level upward, and nonmetallic wiring methods require an equipment grounding conductor.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Any underground raceways or cables running beneath defined Class I locations are automatically treated as being inside a Class I, Division 1 or Zone 1 location!
