SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Elevators & Lift Systems (Part 1 - Scope & Working Space) ⚡
From high-rise elevators to wheelchair platform lifts, Article 620 governs all electrical wiring and equipment associated with vertical transportation. Let's break down voltage limits and clearance rules! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & VOLTAGE LIMITATIONS) What Equipment is Covered?
Comprehensive Scope: Elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, moving walks, platform lifts, and stairway chairlifts.
Voltage Caps: Supply voltage generally shall not exceed 300 volts between conductors. However, motor and controller branch circuits are permitted up to 1000 volts. (Any voltage over 600V requires "DANGER — HIGH VOLTAGE" warning labels).
SLIDE 3 (WORKING CLEARANCES & FLEXIBLE LEADS) Troubleshooting in Tight Spaces:
Working Space: Standard working clearances under Section 110.26 apply to elevator controllers and disconnects.
Flexible Connections Exception: Because elevator technicians must perform diagnostic work while equipment is energized in tight spaces, Section 620.6(A) permits flexible leads on controllers and disconnects so the equipment can be repositioned to meet clear working space requirements!
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
All live parts of electrical apparatus in hoistways, landing areas, and car tops must be completely enclosed to protect against accidental contact during routine maintenance.
