⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Mobile Home Disconnects & Outlets (Part 2) ⚡
Where must the main disconnect be located? What are the special receptacle and "heat tape" rules under Article 550? Let's check Sections 550.11 through 550.13! 👇
SLIDE 2 (DISCONNECTING MEANS & PANELBOARDS)
Main Controls and Clearances:
Readily Accessible Disconnect: A single disconnecting means must be installed in a readily accessible location near the feeder entrance, plainly marked "Main".
Height & Location Restrictions: The bottom of the panelboard must be at least 600 mm (24 in.) above the floor level. Panelboards are strictly prohibited inside bathrooms and clothes closets.
Working Space: Requires a clear working space at least 750 mm (30 in.) wide and 750 mm (30 in.) deep in front of the panel, extending from the floor to the top.
SLIDE 3 (REQUIRED RECEPTACLES & HEAT TAPES)
Specialized Outlet Mandates:
The 6-Foot Rule: Wall spaces 600 mm (2 ft) wide or more require receptacles so no point along the floor line is more than 1.8 m (6 ft) away horizontally.
Pipe Heating Cable Outlet: A dedicated GFCI-protected receptacle must be installed on the underside of the unit within 600 mm (2 ft) of the cold water inlet to supply pipe heating cables.
Prohibited Spots: Receptacles are banned within or directly over bathtubs/showers, in face-up countertop positions, or directly above electric baseboard heaters.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Heat tape receptacles on the underside of a mobile home must be wired downstream of an interior GFCI so occupants can easily notice if the circuit trips!
