⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Circuit Separation & Wet Locations (Part 4) ⚡
Can control wires share a raceway with power conductors? What are the strict DC voltage rules in wet ride areas? Let's finish Article 522! 👇
Shared Enclosures & Raceways:
Multiple Control Circuits: Control circuits can share a cable, cable tray, or raceway regardless of AC or DC, provided all conductors are insulated for the maximum voltage present.
Control with Power Circuits: Mixing control and power conductors is allowed only if the equipment powered is functionally associated, inside control centers, or properly separated in manholes and cable trays via solid fixed barriers.
Safety Limits & Shutdowns:
Ungrounded Control Circuits: AC circuits $\ge$ 50V and DC circuits $\ge$ 60V are permitted to be ungrounded if continuous control power is required for an orderly shutdown and ground detectors are installed.
Wet Locations (522.28): Where wet contact is likely, ungrounded 2-wire DC control circuits are severely restricted to a maximum of 30 volts for continuous DC or 12.4 volts peak for interrupted DC (aligning with the low-voltage contact limit).
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Water rides and damp amusement environments require careful DC voltage limitation to protect patrons and maintenance staff from shock hazards!
