⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Class II Wiring Methods (Part 2 - Article 502) ⚡
Threaded conduit, compression EMT, and cable tray spacing in dusty atmospheres—how do you run wiring legally in Class II locations? Let's check Section 502.10! 👇
Heavy-Duty Dust Exclusion:
Conduit & Cable: Permitted wiring methods include threaded Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC), Intermediate Metal Conduit (IMC), and listed metallic-sheathed cables like Type MC-HL, ITC-HL, and TC-ER-HL used in restricted industrial establishments.
Cable Tray Rules: When installed in cable trays, cables must be laid in a single layer with a space not less than the larger cable diameter between adjacent cables to prevent dangerous heat buildup from trapped dust.
Flexible Options & Boxes:
Division 2 Additions: In Division 2, wiring methods expand to include Type ITC, TC, and Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) installed with listed compression-type connectors and couplings.
Dusttight Boxes: All boxes and fittings in Class II locations must be dusttight. In Division 1, boxes containing taps, joints, or terminal connections must also feature threaded bosses and be identified for Class II.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Set-screw fittings are not permitted with EMT in Class II, Division 2 locations—you must use listed compression-type connectors and couplings to maintain dust-tight integrity!
