SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Recreational Vehicles (Part 1 - Article 551) ⚡
RV wiring, factory standards, and electrical datum planes—welcome to Article 551! How does the National Electrical Code regulate mobile living spaces and park infrastructure? Let's break down the scope! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & LISTING REQUIREMENTS)
What Article 551 Covers:
The RV Scope: Applies to electrical conductors and equipment installed within or on RVs (excluding low-voltage and automotive circuits), supply cords connecting RVs to power, and park-level equipment.
Listing Mandate: All electrical materials, devices, appliances, fittings, and equipment installed in or on RVs must be listed and labeled.
Factory Standards: Many states require factory inspections adhering to NFPA 1192 and ANSI/RVIA low-voltage standards.
SLIDE 3 (ELECTRICAL DATUM PLANE)
Water Levels & Clearances:
The Datum Plane: Encompasses areas subject to tidal fluctuations, rain, snowfall, or human intervention like dams and floodgates.
Tidal vs. Non-Tidal: In tidal areas, the electrical datum plane is horizontal 606 mm (2 ft) above the highest high tide level. In non-tidal areas, it sits 606 mm (2 ft) above normal high water level.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: State laws tie direct safety standards straight into NEC enforcement by requiring factory compliance testing for all recreational vehicle electrical systems!
