⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Portable Power & Outdoor Service Lighting (Part 4) ⚡
How must commercial appliance outlet centers and portable switchboards be labeled? Why do sine-wave dimmers affect neutral sizing? Let's finish Article 518! 👇
Qualified Access & Mandatory Warnings:
Restricted Access: OCPDs, power outlets, and commercial appliance outlet centers must not be accessible to the general public.
Mandatory Warning Label: Must be marked conspicuously:
FOR USE BY QUALIFIED PERSONS ONLY. RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK. Disconnect all power before servicing. Disconnecting means location:
Neutral Current & Workspace Illumination:
Phase-Control vs. Sine-Wave Dimmers: Feeders supplying solid-state phase-control 3-phase 4-wire dimmers treat the neutral as a current-carrying conductor. However, sine-wave dimmers are linear loads and do not require the neutral to be counted for ampacity adjustment.
Outdoor Service Illumination (518.8): Fixed service equipment installed outdoors serving assembly occupancies must have illumination provided (automatic-only control is prohibited).
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always check whether your theatrical or architectural lighting control system uses phase-control or sine-wave technology before calculating conduit fill and neutral ampacity derating[cite: 15]!
