SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: HVAC Disconnecting Means (Part 2) ⚡
Sizing disconnects for 115% of load, line-of-sight requirements, and split-system identification rules—let's check Sections 440.11 through 440.15! 👇
SLIDE 2 (DISCONNECT RATINGS & AMPERAGE)
Sizing the Disconnect:
Ampere Rating: A disconnecting means serving a hermetic refrigerant motor-compressor must have an ampere rating of at least 115 percent of the nameplate rated-load current or branch-circuit selection current, whichever is greater.
Locked-Rotor Equivalence: Horsepower ratings must account for both the full-load condition and the locked-rotor condition combined across multi-compressor or combination loads.
SLIDE 3 (LOCATION AND INDOOR UNIT IDENTIFICATION)
Sight and Accessibility Rules:
Within Sight & Accessible: Disconnecting means must be located within sight from, and readily accessible from, the air-conditioning or refrigerating equipment.
Split-System ID: Outdoor disconnecting means for split-system HVAC installations in other than one- and two-family dwellings must be clearly marked with the location of all indoor units they supply.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Unlike standard motors that allow remote lockable disconnect exceptions under strict industrial supervision, Article 440 HVAC disconnects generally demand a local disconnect within sight and readily accessible from the unit!
