⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Mobile & Manufactured Homes (Part 1 - Article 550) ⚡
HUD construction standards, single feeder assemblies, and mobile home power supplies—welcome to Article 550! How does the National Electrical Code regulate manufactured housing feeds? Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & HUD STANDARDS)
Off-Site Building Standards:
The Article 550 Scope: Covers electrical conductors and equipment installed within or on mobile and manufactured homes, supply connections, and park wiring up to the home's service equipment.
Federal HUD Compliance: Newly manufactured homes must comply with HUD Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards (24 CFR 3280).
Certification Labels: Manufacturers attach a federal certification label, allowing AHJs to approve the installation nationwide without dismantling the home, while local codes apply to on-site work.
SLIDE 3 (POWER SUPPLY & FEEDER ASSEMBLIES)
Feeder Rules & Limitations:
Single Feeder Limit: The power supply to a mobile home must consist of not more than one listed 50-ampere mobile home feeder assembly (or a 40-ampere cord if factory-equipped with gas or oil-fired central heating and cooking).
Feeder Construction: Must be a listed type with four continuous conductors, including a continuous green (or green with yellow stripes) equipment grounding conductor.
Length Requirements: Overall cord length must be between 6.4 m (21 ft) and 11 m (36.5 ft), with at least 6.0 m (20 ft) exposed from the plug cap to the home's entry point.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Cords with adapters, pigtail ends, extension cords, and similar items must never be attached to or shipped with a mobile home feeder assembly!
