⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Electrostatic Coating & Printing (Part 4) ⚡
What automatic safety interlocks are required for robotic electrostatic sprayers? How do printing presses and dip tanks handle static discharge? Let's finish Article 516! 👇
High-Voltage Safety Rules:
Power Equipment: Transformers and high-voltage supplies must be installed outside the Class I location.
Automatic Controls: Electrostatic apparatus requires automatic de-energization upon ventilation fan stoppage, conveyor stoppage, excessive current leakage, or primary power loss.
Handheld Guns: Handheld electrostatic guns must have grounded handles with 1 megohm or less resistance to prevent operator static buildup.
Temporary Structures & Dipping:
Membrane Enclosures: The interior of a temporary spray membrane enclosure is Class I, Division 1, surrounded by a 1.5 m (5 ft) Class I, Division 2 zone.
Printing & Dipping (516.29): Sumps and pits within 7620 mm (25 ft) of a vapor source are Division 1 / Zone 1. Space within 1525 mm (5 ft) of a vapor source is Division 1 / Zone 1, while dip tanks and ink fountains are Division 1 / Zone 0.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: In printing processes, proactive provisions must be made to dissipate static electric charges from all nonconductive substrates to prevent stray spark ignitions!
