SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Cable Mixing & Power Separation (Part 2) ⚡
Can you bundle data cables with fire alarm wires? Can low-voltage lines share a raceway with 600V power? Let's check out the mixing and separation rules in Article 722! 👇
SLIDE 2 (MIXING LIMITED-ENERGY CABLES) Grouping Different Circuits:
Compatible Bundles: Plenum, riser, and general-purpose limited-energy cables (Class 2, Class 3, Class 4, communications, and PLFA) are permitted to share raceways and cable trays under Table 722.13(A) guidelines.
Note: Audio amplifier circuits installed as Class 2/3 are strictly prohibited from sharing raceways with PLFA fire alarm cables to prevent fault interference!
SLIDE 3 (THE 2-INCH POWER SEPARATION RULE) Keeping Low-Voltage Away From High Voltage:
Minimum Separation: Limited-energy cables must maintain at least 50 mm (2 in.) separation from electric light, power, Class 1, and non-power-limited fire alarm circuits.
Exceptions: Sharing is permitted if separated by permanent barriers, dedicated dividers, or if power conductors are metal-sheathed (like MC cable).
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Never run unseparated low-voltage data cables alongside high-voltage power lines in an open cable tray. A breakdown in insulation could feed hazardous line voltage directly into sensitive IT equipment!
