Why Informative Annex C is Annexed (Informational vs. Mandatory)
Informational Tool: The conductor fill tables in Informative Annex C are provided strictly as an informational tool and are not a mandatory part of the NEC requirements.
Pre-Calculated Shortcut: The mandatory requirements for raceway fill are established in Chapter 9 Table 1 (percentage fill) along with dimensions in Tables 4, 5, and 5A. Annex C is categorized as an "Informative Annex" because it provides pre-computed tables derived from those Chapter 9 rules to save installers time on manual calculations].
Primary Use Cases
Same-Size Conductors: Annex C tables apply specifically when all conductors in the conduit or tubing are of the same physical size and have identical insulation characteristics.
Ensuring Compliance: Using the Annex C tables guarantees compliance with raceway fill limits in Section 300.19 and the specific Chapter 3 conduit and tubing articles.
Wiring Method Coverage: The annex provides 13 sets of tables corresponding to the 13 conduit and tubing wiring methods recognized in Chapter 3 of the NEC.
Table Categories & Organization
Each wiring method section in Annex C is subdivided into three conductor categories:
General Wiring Conductors: Conductors governed by Article 310.
Fixture Wires: Conductors governed by Article 402.
Compact Stranded Conductors: Listed in Annex C as "A" tables.
Important Notes & Wire-Pulling Considerations
Non-Optimum Pulling Conditions: Informational Note No. 1 to Chapter 9 Table 1 advises that even if Annex C permits a specific maximum wire count, you should always consider using a lesser conductor fill or a larger conduit size whenever wire-pulling conditions are not optimum (e.g., long runs or multiple bends).
Different-Sized Conductors: If raceways contain conductors of varying physical sizes or different insulation types, Annex C cannot be used; raceway fill must be calculated manually using the dimensional tables in Chapter 9.
Steps to Use the Annex C Guide
Select the Wiring Method Table: Locate the table set matching the specific metal or nonmetallic conduit/tubing type being installed[.
Choose Conductor Type: Select general wiring, fixture wire, or compact stranded conductor ("A" table)[.
Match Insulation: Identify the exact insulation type of the wire[1].
Determine Trade Size: Cross-reference the required wire gauge and quantity to find the appropriate metric designator or trade size conduit
