SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Secondary Protection & Hazardous Locations (Part 4) ⚡
How do secondary protectors integrate with primary arresters? Can you install a primary protector inside a Classified Hazardous area? Let's finish Article 742! 👇
Equipment Terminal Connections:
Equipment Side Connection: Any secondary overvoltage protection, surge arrester, or grounding connection must be connected on the equipment terminal side of the secondary protector current-limiting device.
Why? This ensures the current-limiting element clears line faults before energy hits downstream electronic equipment!
Keeping Protectors Out of Explosive Zones:
Prohibited in Hazardous Areas: Primary protectors shall not be located in any Hazardous (Classified) location (Article 500/505) or in the vicinity of easily ignitable materials.
Exception: Permitted only where explicitly authorized by hazardous locations articles (501.150, 502.150, or 503.150).
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Sparking surge arresters or discharging primary protectors can ignite flammable gases or combustible dust. Always keep your low-voltage protection equipment outside hazardous boundaries!
