⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Production Luminaires & Outdoor Gear (Part 3) ⚡
Can you take indoor studio gear outside? When are luminaires required to be listed? Let's review Sections 530.21 through 530.26! 👇
Safe Field Operations:
Listing & Approval: Portable stage and studio electrical equipment must be listed or approved, and field-assembled cord sets with listed components are permitted in production areas.
Outdoor Deployment: Equipment not identified for outdoor use can be deployed outdoors only if supervised by qualified persons while energized and barriered from the general public.
Purpose-Built Gear: Purpose-built luminaires, lighting, and effects equipment do not require official listing but must be approved.
Handling High-Output Fixtures:
Portable Luminaires: Must be listed, with an exception for portable luminaires used specifically as properties on a motion picture or television set.
Enclosed-Arc Lamps: Portable enclosed-arc lamps and associated ballasts must be listed.
Extra-Hard Cords: Interconnecting cord sets and cables for enclosed-arc luminaires must be of the extra-hard usage type and listed.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Feed-through outlets on portable equipment matching the rating of the supply inlet do not require separate overcurrent protection within that unit!
