SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Phase Converters (Part 1 - Article 455) ⚡
Converting single-phase power to 3-phase, the strict ban on reconditioned units, and nameplate essentials—welcome to Article 450's cousin, Article 455! Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & RECONDITIONED EQUIPMENT BAN)
What Article 455 Covers & Prohibits:
System Scope: Covers the installation and use of static and rotary phase converters used to supply 3-phase equipment where only single-phase power is available.
Reconditioned Ban: Reconditioned phase converters are strictly prohibited from being installed.
SLIDE 3 (MARKING & GROUNDING)
Nameplates and Ground Connections:
Required Nameplate Data: Each phase converter must display a permanent nameplate detailing the manufacturer, input/output voltages, frequency, input full-load amperes, min/max load sizes, and rotary 3-phase full-load amperes.
Grounding Connection: A means for attaching an equipment grounding conductor termination per Section 250.8 must be provided.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always check your phase converter nameplate for the specific input full-load amperes and rotary 3-phase ratings—and remember that reconditioned phase converters cannot be installed under any circumstances!
