SLIDE 1 — HERE'S WHERE PEOPLE GET TRICKED
You don't calculate conductor area from the copper alone.
The NEC tables give you the applicable conductor dimensions/areas, including insulation where applicable.
📚 Chapter 9, Table 5
SLIDE 2 — YOUR WIRE HAS AN AREA
Example:
Imagine your table lookup gives:
#12 THHN = 0.0133 in²
You have:
10 conductors
Then:
0.0133 × 10
= 0.133 in²
That's your total conductor area.
SLIDE 3 — NOW COMPARE
Raceway allowable area:
0.213 in²
Conductors:
0.133 in²
Therefore:
0.133 ≤ 0.213
✅ CONDUIT FILL PASSES
That's the basic idea.
SLIDE 4 — EXAM CHECK
You have:
12 conductors
Each has an area of:
0.0133 in²
Total?
A️⃣ 0.133
B️⃣ 0.1596
C️⃣ 0.196
D️⃣ 1.596
🔥 ANSWER: B
0.0133 × 12 = 0.1596 in²
