SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Exposure Controls & Safety Interlocks (Part 3) ⚡
How does the NEC prevent accidental exposure to live high-voltage components inside industrial X-ray cabinets? Let's check out Part II of Article 660! 👇
Initiating Exposures Safely:
Separate Control Device: Fixed X-ray equipment requires a separate control device in the supply or primary circuit of the high-voltage transformer to initiate, automatically time, and terminate exposures.
High-Voltage Protection: A protective device must be included to manage fault loads resulting from breakdowns in the high-voltage circuit.
Radiographic & Laboratory Safety:
Interlock Mandate: Radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment must be effectively enclosed or feature safety interlocks that automatically de-energize equipment upon access to live parts.
Diffraction Indicator Lights: Diffraction and irradiation equipment without interlocks must provide a positive visual indicator (like a pilot light or meter deflection) showing when energized.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Where multiple X-ray units operate from a single high-voltage circuit, Section 660.24 requires an independent high-voltage switch or disconnect for each unit to safely isolate equipment during maintenance!
