Informative Annex J (Reserved / Deleted)
What it used to be: Annex J historically contained information and guidelines excerpted from the ADA Standards for Accessible Design, specifically addressing accessibility standards for things like reach ranges for switches and overcurrent devices.
Status in 2026: It is officially marked as Reserved (effectively deleted). The Code-Making Panel removed it because the old ADA excerpts had become entirely out of sync with modern editions of the ICC A117.1 standard and current building regulations. Keeping it in caused conflicts and confusion regarding accessibility rules. Now, the NEC leaves accessibility entirely to enforced building codes rather than attempting to house outdated federal design standards in an informative annex.
