SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Anti-Islanding & Microgrids (Part 4 - Article 705) ⚡ What happens to your solar inverter when the utility grid goes down? Anti-islanding protection is a matter of life and death for utility lineworkers. Let's finish Article 705! 👇
SLIDE 2 (LOSS OF PRIMARY SOURCE / ANTI-ISLANDING) Automatic Utility Disconnection:
The Grid Goes Down: Interactive power sources must automatically disconnect from all ungrounded conductors of the primary source when the utility phase opens.
Reconnection Rules: Systems cannot resume exporting power until utility voltage and phase are fully restored across all connected lines.
SLIDE 3 (PHASE UNBALANCE & MICROGRIDS) System Stability & Part II:
Voltage Unbalance: Single-phase interactive sources connected to multiphase systems must limit voltage unbalance at the point of interconnection to not more than 3 percent.
Microgrid Systems: Covered under Part II, microgrids can disconnect from the utility and operate seamlessly in standalone "island mode" using specialized control and isolation equipment.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Anti-islanding protection prevents "intentional or unintentional islanding," ensuring that distributed generation systems never energize dead utility lines where lineworkers are trying to make emergency repairs. Safety is always priority number one!
