⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Grounding & Knife Switches (Part 4) ⚡
High-amp isolating knife switches, metal enclosure grounding, and dead-front requirements—let's finish Article 404! 👇
SLIDE 2 (KNIFE SWITCH LIMITS & GROUNDING)
Operating High-Current Switches:
Isolating Only: Knife switches rated over 1200A at 250V or less (and over 1000A up to 1000V) must be used only as isolating switches and shall not be opened under load.
Metal Enclosure Grounding: Metal enclosures for switches and circuit breakers must be connected to equipment grounding conductors per Article 250. Nonmetallic boxes require an EGC-inclusive wiring method.
SLIDE 3 (CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS & DEAD-FRONT RULES)
Enclosure Safety:
Rating Marking: Switches must be marked with current, voltage, and horsepower ratings where applicable.
Dead-Front Requirement: Switches mounted in enclosures with doors or hinged covers must be dead-front, unless accessing the interior requires a tool.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Never open a massive knife switch under load if it exceeds its interrupting rating—always kill the upstream breaker first to prevent dangerous arc flashes!
