⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Aircraft Hangars Overview (Part 1 - Article 513) ⚡
Flammable aviation fuel, maintenance bays, and hangar floor classifications—welcome to Article 513! Which aircraft facilities fall under these strict code rules? Let's break it down! 👇
What Buildings Are Covered:
The Scope: Applies to buildings housing aircraft containing Class I (flammable) liquids or Class II (combustible) liquids whose temperatures are above their flash points, and where aircraft undergo service, repairs, or alterations.
Excluded Locations: Does not apply to locations used exclusively for defueled aircraft or aircraft that have never contained fuel.
Jet-A Fuel Note: Jet-A is a Class II combustible liquid (flash point at or above 100°F); Article 513 does not apply unless the fuel is used or stored above its flash point.
Hazard Boundaries Near the Floor:
Pits and Depressions: Any pit or depression below the hangar floor is classified as a Class I, Division 1 or Zone 1 location extending up to floor level.
General Hangar Area: The entire hangar area (and communicating areas not suitably separated) is classified as a Class I, Division 2 or Zone 2 location up to a level of 450 mm (18 in.) above the floor.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always verify whether an aircraft under construction or storage has contained fuel—manufacturing plants building aircraft that have never held fuel are entirely outside the scope of Article 513!
