Hook: New article — Overcurrent Protection. This is the article behind every breaker and fuse you've ever touched. Let's start with the basics.
Slide 2: Article 240 covers OCPDs up to 1000V AC/1500V DC in Parts I–VII, with Part VIII covering supervised industrial installations at those same voltage limits. The whole point of overcurrent protection is opening the circuit before conductor temperatures get dangerous. Required listed equipment includes OCPDs themselves, GFPE relays/breakers, GFCI devices, and fuse reducers.
Slide 3: Some equipment is allowed to be reconditioned (rebuilt/refurbished) — low-voltage power circuit breakers and electromechanical protective relays/current transformers make the cut. But GFPE equipment, GFCIs, low-voltage fuseholders and nonrenewable fuses, molded-case circuit breakers, and electronic trip units for low-voltage power breakers can never be reconditioned — new only.
Quiz: Can a molded-case circuit breaker be reconditioned and reinstalled?
Answer: No — molded-case circuit breakers are on the "not permitted" list for reconditioning.
