SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Wiring Methods & Insulation (Part 3 - Article 724) ⚡
Can you run Class 1 control wires in the same raceway as 600V power conductors? What insulation rating do you need? Let's check out Section 724.46! 👇
Insulation Requirements:
Chapter 3 Methods: Class 1 circuits must generally be installed using Chapter 3 wiring methods.
600V Minimum Insulation: Conductor insulation must be rated for system voltage and not less than 600 volts, which is why Chapter 3 wiring is effectively mandated.
Sharing Raceways with Line Voltage:
Functionally Associated: Class 1 circuits and power-supply circuits are permitted to occupy the same cable, enclosure, or raceway without a barrier only if the equipment powered is functionally associated (like motor control wiring inside a starter enclosure).
Non-associated power circuits require a solid physical barrier.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: When using 18 AWG or 16 AWG wire for Class 1 circuits, you can't just grab any spool—you must use approved conductor types listed in Section 724.49(B), such as TF, TFFN, or SF-2!
