SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Transformer Installations (Part 1 - Article 450) ⚡
Transformer scopes, exclusions, and primary/secondary overcurrent protection rules—welcome to Article 450! How does the National Electrical Code regulate transformer circuits? Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & EXCLUSIONS)
What Article 450 Covers & Excludes:
General Scope: Article 450 covers the installation of all transformers, with specific exclusions for current transformers, Class 2 and 3 circuit transformers, sign/outline lighting transformers, and testing equipment.
Interconnection: Individual transformers must comply with the article unless specific provisions allow them to operate interconnected as a single unit.
SLIDE 3 (OVERCURRENT PROTECTION TABLES)
Sizing Primary and Secondary OCPDs:
Transformers Over 1000V (450.5(A)): Primary and secondary protection must follow Table 450.5(A), where secondary OCPDs are permitted to consist of up to six circuit breakers or sets of fuses grouped in one location.
Transformers 1000V or Less (450.5(B)): Sized via Table 450.5(B) using primary-only protection (typically 125%) or a combination of primary and secondary protection.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: When protecting a transformer rated 1000 volts or less with primary-only protection, remember that your primary OCPD is generally capped at 125% of the transformer's rated primary current!
