Surge Arrester Conductors & Interconnections — Article 242 Complete!
SLIDE 1 — Connection Points & Conductor Sizing
🔌 CONNECTION (242.50)
Surge arresters connect to one of these 4 points (same list as Type 1 SPDs):
1️⃣ Grounded service conductor
2️⃣ Grounding electrode conductor
3️⃣ Grounding electrode for the service
4️⃣ Equipment grounding terminal in service equipment
📏 CONDUCTOR SIZE (242.52)
Conductors between the arrester and the line, AND between the arrester and ground, must be 6 AWG copper or aluminum minimum. (Compare that to SPDs in Part II, which only needed 14 AWG copper / 12 AWG aluminum — makes sense given the higher voltage/energy involved.)
SLIDE 2 — Interconnections (The Tricky Part)
🔗 INTERCONNECTIONS (242.54)
When a surge arrester protects a transformer feeding a secondary distribution system, it needs to be interconnected one of 3 ways:
(A) Metal Interconnection — direct metal tie to the secondary grounded conductor or its grounding electrode conductor, PLUS an additional grounding connection (like a water-pipe system with enough connections, or a multigrounded neutral system with enough ground connections per mile)
(B) Spark Gap or Listed Device — used when a direct metal tie isn't in place; breakdown voltage requirements differ for ungrounded vs. multigrounded neutral primary systems, and there must be another ground at least 20 ft from the arrester's grounding electrode
(C) Special Permission — any other interconnection method needs explicit special permission
SLIDE 3 — Final Grounding Rule
🌎 GROUNDING ELECTRODE CONDUCTOR CONNECTIONS (242.56)
Same as SPDs — surge arrester grounding connections default back to Article 250, Parts III and X, unless Article 242 says otherwise. And if that conductor runs through a metal enclosure, it still has to comply with 250.64(E).
🎉 That's a wrap on Article 242 — Overvoltage Protection, start to finish!
SLIDE 4 — Exam Question + CTA
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 242
