⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Control Power Sources (Part 2) ⚡
How are power-limited versus non-power-limited control circuits powered and protected in amusement attractions? Let's check Section 522.10! 👇
Strict Power Caps:
Maximum Ratings: Power-limited control circuits must be supplied from a source with a rated output of not more than 30 volts and 1000 volt-amperes.
Transformers & OCPDs: Control transformers must comply with Article 450 Parts I and II. Other power sources must be protected by OCPDs rated at not more than 167 percent of the source's VA rating divided by its rated voltage, with non-interchangeable fusible links.
Output Ceilings: To comply with the 1000 VA limit, alternative power sources are capped at a maximum output of 2500 VA, and the product of max current and max voltage cannot exceed 10,000 VA (determined with OCPD bypassed).
Higher Capacity Systems:
Voltage & Power Limits: Non-power-limited control circuits must not exceed 300 volts, and their power output is not required to be limited.
Protection Rules: Non-power-limited sources other than transformers must be protected by OCPDs rated at not more than 125 percent of the source's VA rating divided by its rated voltage.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always verify whether your amusement ride control power source falls under the 30V/1000VA power-limited rule or the higher-capacity non-power-limited category before selecting overcurrent protection!
