SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Sensitive Electronic Equipment (Part 1 - Balanced Power) ⚡
Recording studios, broadcast centers, and high-end audio facilities—welcome to Article 647! How does 60/120V balanced power eliminate ground hum and electrical noise? Let's break down the scope and panelboard rules! 👇
Reducing Objectionable Audio/Video Noise:
Separately Derived Systems: Covers 120V line-to-line systems operating at 60 volts to ground on each of two ungrounded conductors (balanced technical power).
Occupancy Restrictions: Permitted strictly in commercial or industrial occupancies and restricted to areas under close supervision by qualified personnel.
Simultaneous Disconnection:
2-Pole Common-Trip Breakers: Because both power conductors operate at 60V to ground (neither conductor is a neutral), feeders and branch circuits must use 2-pole common-trip circuit breakers to disconnect all ungrounded conductors simultaneously.
Panel Markings: Panelboards must be clearly marked on the face indicating the 60/120V technical power system voltage.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: In a 60/120V technical power system, there is no grounded neutral conductor on your branch circuits! Both wires carry 60V relative to ground, making a 2-pole simultaneous disconnect mandatory on every single circuit.
