SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Disconnects & Motor Overloads (Part 3) ⚡
Simultaneous disconnects, power-factor-adjusted motor overloads, and mandatory nameplate data—let's review Sections 460.10 through 460.13! 👇
SLIDE 2 (DISCONNECTING MEANS & MOTOR OVERLOADS)
Isolating and Protecting Circuits:
Simultaneous Disconnect: A disconnect must open all ungrounded conductors simultaneously, with an ampacity rating not less than 135 percent of the capacitor's rated current.
Motor Overload Adjustment: When a capacitor is connected on the load side of motor overload devices, the overload rating/setting must be adjusted downward based on the improved power factor.
SLIDE 3 (GROUNDING & NAMEPLATES)
Cases and Nameplate Markings:
Grounding Cases: Capacitor cases must be connected to the equipment grounding conductor (unless supported on structures designed for non-ground potential).
Mandatory Nameplate Details: Nameplates must state the manufacturer, rated voltage, frequency, kVAr or amperes, phases, liquid volume/type, and internal discharge device status.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: When installing power factor correction capacitors on the load side of motor starters, make sure to scale down your motor overload relay settings to match the reduced line current!
