SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: High-Voltage Capacitors (Part 4) ⚡
Capacitive load switching, fault pressure protection, and the 5-minute high-voltage discharge rule—let's finish Article 460! 👇
SLIDE 2 (HIGH-VOLTAGE SWITCHING & ISOLATION)
Controlling High-Voltage Banks (460.24):
Switch Ratings: Switches for capacitors over 1000V must be rated for capacitive loads, carry at least 135% of rated current continuously, and withstand severe inrush and fault currents.
Visible Isolation: Means must be installed to isolate units with a visible gap in the electrical circuit for safe servicing.
SLIDE 3 (FAULT PROTECTION & 5-MINUTE DISCHARGE)
Safeguards Over 1000V:
Fault Current Detection: Protection must be provided to detect and interrupt fault currents likely to cause dangerous internal pressures within individual capacitors.
Discharge Time (>1000V): High-voltage capacitors must have means to reduce residual voltage to 50 volts or less within 5 minutes after disconnection.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always verify high-voltage capacitor discharge timers reduce residual voltage to 50 volts within 5 minutes before touching terminals during maintenance!
