Network-Powered Broadband Communications Systems: Final Spans, On-Building Rules, Underground Cover, Separation, Support & Splicing!
SLIDE 1 | Final Spans & Between Buildings (830.44(D)–(E))
🏠 FINAL SPANS (830.44(D))
🔹 Final spans WITHOUT an outer jacket may attach to the building, but must stay at least 900mm (3 ft) from:
▫️ Windows designed to open
▫️ Doors, porches, balconies
▫️ Ladders, stairs, fire escapes, or similar spots
✅ Exception: conductors run ABOVE the top level of a window can be closer
🚫 Never install beneath openings where materials get moved (farm/commercial building openings), and never where they obstruct entrance to those openings
🏢 BETWEEN BUILDINGS (830.44(E))
🔹 Cables, supports, and attachment fixtures must be identified for outdoor aerial use and strong enough for their loads (wind and ice count!)
🔹 Not self-supporting? Attach to a messenger cable rated for the load
SLIDE 2 | On Buildings (830.44(F))
🔌 SEPARATION FROM LIGHT/POWER (830.44(F)(1))
At least 100mm (4 in.) from electric light, power, Class 1, or non-power-limited fire alarm conductors not in raceway or cable, OR a continuous, firmly fixed nonconductor barrier.
🔧 OTHER COMMS SYSTEMS (830.44(F)(2))
No unnecessary interference with maintenance, and no system may abrade another’s conductors, cables, messenger, or equipment.
🛡️ PROTECTION FROM DAMAGE (830.44(F)(3))
Cables on buildings within 2.5m (8 ft) of finished grade need enclosures, raceways, or other approved protection.
✅ Exception: a LOW-power circuit with a listed fault protection device on the network side doesn’t need the extra protection.
SLIDE 3 | Underground Entering Buildings (830.47)
🌎 MINIMUM COVER (Table 830.47(A))
🔹 Most locations: Direct burial cable 18 in. | RMC/IMC 6 in. | Nonmetallic raceway (listed for direct burial, no concrete) 12 in.
🔹 Under 2 in. concrete in a trench: 12 in. | 6 in. | 6 in.
🔹 Under a building (raceway only): 0
🔹 Under 4 in. exterior concrete slab, no vehicles, extending 6 in. past the installation: 12 in. | 4 in. | 4 in.
🔹 One- and two-family dwelling driveways and parking areas: 12 in. | 12 in. | 12 in.
💡 Cover is measured from the top of the cable or raceway to the top of finished grade, concrete, or similar cover. Lesser depth is OK where cables rise for terminations or splices.
🪨 Solid rock → wiring must be in a metal or nonmetallic raceway permitted for direct burial, covered by at least 2 in. of concrete extending down to rock.
🛡️ PHYSICAL DAMAGE (830.47(B))
🔹 Direct-buried cables emerging from the ground need protection from the minimum cover depth up to at least 2.5m (8 ft)
🔹 BMU and BLU cables: RMC, IMC, rigid nonmetallic conduit, or other approved means
✅ Exception: low-power circuits with a listed fault protection device on the network side
SLIDE 4 | Inside Buildings + Final Exam (830.133)
🔀 SEPARATION IN RACEWAYS, TRAYS, BOXES (830.133(A)(1))
🔹 Low- and medium-power broadband cables CAN share the same raceway, tray, box, or enclosure
🚫 Medium-power cables CANNOT share with: communications cables, conductive fiber, CATV coax, Class 1/2/3/4 cables, power-limited fire alarm, electric light, power cables, or non-power-limited fire alarm cables
✅ Exception 1: OK with light/power/Class 1/NPLFA conductors if separated by a permanent barrier or listed divider
✅ Exception 2: power conductors solely feeding the broadband equipment must maintain 6mm (¼ in.) separation
📏 OTHER APPLICATIONS (830.133(A)(2))
Medium-power cables must be at least 50mm (2 in.) from light, power, Class 1, and NPLFA conductors, with exceptions for raceways/armored cables or a continuous fixed nonconductor.
🔩 SUPPORT (830.133(B))
Never strap, tape, or attach medium-power cables to the OUTSIDE of any conduit or raceway for support.
🔗 SPLICING (830.133(C))
Spliced or extended medium-power cables require a listed junction box or listed patch panel.
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 830 (Part 2)
Q: Per 830.133(B), how may network-powered broadband medium-power cables be supported in relation to a conduit or raceway?
A) Strapped to the outside of the conduit
B) Taped to the outside of the raceway
C) They may NOT be attached to the exterior of any conduit or raceway for support
D) Only with listed cable ties
