Slide 1 — Hook "One of the most test-heavy sections in the whole NEC — underground burial depths. Today: the cover table and wet-location rules."
Slide 2 — 300.7(A) Minimum cover (Table 300.7(A) highlights)
General locations: 24" for direct burial, 6" for RMC/IMC, 18" for EMT/listed nonmetallic raceways, 12" for GFCI-protected ≤20A residential branch circuits, 6" for ≤30V irrigation/landscape lighting circuits.
Under a building: 0" required IF in a raceway or Type MC/MI cable identified for direct burial.
Under streets/highways/roads/alleys/driveways/parking lots: 24" across the board, regardless of wiring method.
One/two-family dwelling driveways (dwelling-related use only): 18" for most methods, but only 12" for the GFCI-protected ≤20A residential branch circuit column.
Where solid rock blocks the required depth: use a raceway (metal or direct-burial-rated nonmetallic) covered by at least 2" of concrete down to the rock.
Slide 3 — 300.7(B), (C), (D)
(B) Wet locations: the interior of any underground enclosure/raceway is automatically considered a WET location — conductors/cables must comply with 310.10(C) accordingly.
(C) Under buildings: underground cable/conductors must be in a raceway — except listed direct-burial/concrete-encasement-rated Type MI or MC cable.
(D) Damage protection: conductors emerging from grade need enclosure/raceway protection from the minimum cover depth up to at least 8 ft above grade (capped at 18" below grade); conductors entering a building need protection to the point of entry; unencased direct-buried service conductors/raceways 18"+ deep need a warning ribbon placed at least 12" above the installation; raceways subject to physical damage need EMT, RMC, IMC, RTRC-XW, Schedule 80 PVC, or equivalent.
Slide 4 — Quiz + CTA Q: "A GFCI-protected residential branch circuit rated 120V, 20A max, buried in a general location, needs a minimum cover of:" A) 6 in. B) 12 in. C) 18 in. D) 24 in.
✅ Answer: B — Table 300.7(A), Column 4: 12" (300 mm) for that specific circuit type.
