2026 NEC References: 230.22, 230.23, 230.24(A)
Part II of Article 230 starts with overhead service conductors.
Individual overhead service conductors must generally be insulated or covered.
An exception applies to a bare grounded conductor within a multiconductor cable.
The general minimum size is:
8 AWG copper
or
6 AWG aluminum
A smaller conductor can be permitted when the service supplies only a single branch circuit under the specified conditions.
Standard overhead service conductors require:
8 ft 6 in. vertical clearance
with the required clearance maintained around the roof edge.
There are exceptions involving specific roof configurations, pedestrian and vehicle areas, low-voltage situations, short overhangs, final spans, and guarded or isolated areas.
What's the minimum vertical clearance for overhead service conductors above a standard roof?
Answer: 8 ft 6 in. (2.6 m).
The required clearance around the roof edge also has to be maintained.
Overhead service conductors aren't simply:
"Put them above the roof."
You need to know the clearance rules and their exceptions.
