⚡ NEC Quick Hit: PV Circuit Sizing & Overcurrent Protection (Part 2) ⚡
Why do PV source circuit conductors require a 125% multiplier before applying thermal correction factors? Let's break down Sections 690.8 and 690.9! 👇
The Continuous Load Multiplier:
Source Circuit Sizing: Maximum current is calculated using the highest short-circuit current ($I_{sc}$) rating of parallel modules multiplied by 125 percent (because solar arrays can deliver high sustained current for more than 3 hours near solar noon).
Conductor Ampacity: Branch and source circuit conductors must have an ampacity not less than 125% of the calculated maximum current before adjustment and correction factors.
Protecting Both Ends of the Circuit:
When OCPDs Are Needed: DC circuits connected to multiple power sources (like parallel strings or energy storage systems) require overcurrent protection to limit fault currents.
Marking: OCPDs used in PV DC circuits must be marked "Photovoltaic" or "PV" and rated specifically for DC interruption.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: DC arcs are notoriously difficult to extinguish compared to AC faults. Never substitute standard automotive or AC-rated fuses in DC solar combiner boxes—always verify the fuse carries the explicit "PV" listing!
