SLIDE 2 — 90.1
Article 90 establishes the foundation for using the NEC.
It addresses:
• Application of the Code
• Code arrangement
• Enforcement
• Mandatory vs. permissive rules
• Equipment examination
• Wiring planning
• Units of measurement
Think of Article 90 as the NEC's "user manual."
SLIDE 3 — 90.2
90.2 establishes what the NEC covers and what it doesn't cover.
The NEC covers electrical installations in places such as:
🏢 Buildings
🏠 Private & public premises
🚐 Mobile homes & RVs
🅿️ Yards & parking lots
⚡ Certain power-producing/connecting installations
🚤 Shore-power installations
But there are also installations specifically outside its scope.
SLIDE 4 — THE BIG IDEA
Not every electrical installation automatically falls under the NEC.
90.2 contains both:
✅ Covered installations
AND
❌ Installations not covered
That's why knowing the scope matters before you start applying individual Articles.
SLIDE 5 — 90.2(B)
90.2(B) gives the NEC's purpose:
Practical safeguarding of people and property from electrical hazards.
But there's an important distinction:
The NEC is NOT intended to be:
❌ A design specification
❌ An instruction manual for untrained people
SLIDE 6 — 90.2(C)
Compliance with the NEC + proper maintenance produces an installation that is essentially free from hazard.
But that doesn't necessarily mean the installation will be:
• Most efficient
• Most convenient
• Best for future expansion

Does that automatically mean the installation is:

Here's the basic structure:

SLIDE 9 — EXAM TRAP 🚨

Informative annexes provide additional information about using the NEC.
They are not part of the enforceable requirements.
Don't answer an exam question by treating an informative annex like a mandatory Code rule.
SLIDE 10 — 90.4
The AHJ — Authority Having Jurisdiction
has responsibility for things such as:
• Interpreting the Code
• Deciding equipment/material approval
• Granting certain special permissions
And 90.4 also recognizes that alternative methods can be permitted when equivalent safety objectives are achieved.
SLIDE 11 — 90.5
This is a HUGE exam concept.
MANDATORY
"shall" / "shall not"
➡️ Required or prohibited.
PERMISSIVE
"shall be permitted" / "shall not be required"
➡️ Allowed or not required.
Then there's explanatory material, such as informational notes.
➡️ Informational.
➡️ Not enforceable as a requirement.
SLIDE 12 — EXAM QUESTION
A. A rule saying an installation shall use a specified method.
B. An informational note explaining why the method is used.
C. A rule stating an alternative method shall be permitted.
D. An informative annex discussing the subject.
90.5(A) identifies mandatory rules through language such as "shall" or "shall not."
SLIDE 13 — 90.7
The NEC recognizes examinations of equipment and materials under standardized conditions as a basis for approval.
There's also an important concept involving factory-installed internal wiring.
If properly listed equipment is installed, the internal factory construction generally isn't something the installer is expected to have completely re-inspected.
But…
⚠️ Alterations or damage still matter.
SLIDE 14 — 90.8
90.8 encourages wiring planning that considers:
• Future expansion
• Spare raceways
• Adequate raceway space
• Additional circuit capacity
• Accessible distribution equipment
The NEC isn't just about getting today's conductors installed.
Good planning can make tomorrow's work safer and easier.
SLIDE 15 — 90.9
The NEC uses SI units as its preferred measurement system.
You'll often see:
SI first
followed by
inch-pound units in parentheses.
But 90.9 provides circumstances where soft conversion is permitted.
SLIDE 16 — FINAL EXAM QUESTION
Under 90.9, compliance with the numerical value shown in either the SI or inch-pound system constitutes compliance with the NEC.
