SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Critical Operations Power Systems (Part 1 - COPS Basics) ⚡
Emergency systems (Article 700) save lives during evacuation, but what about vital infrastructure that must keep running through disasters and beyond? Welcome to Article 708: Critical Operations Power Systems (COPS). Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & RISK ASSESSMENT): What is a COPS Facility?
Mission-Critical Infrastructure: Installed in facilities like 911 dispatch centers, police/fire stations, and water treatment plants where failure threatens national security, the economy, or public safety.
Mandatory Risk Assessment: Section 708.4 requires a documented risk assessment identifying natural hazards (meteorological, geological) and human-caused events (accidental or intentional) to build robust mitigation strategies.
SLIDE 3 (PHYSICAL SECURITY & CYBERSECURITY) Locking Down Critical Assets:
Restricted Access: COPS electrical circuits and equipment must be accessible strictly to qualified personnel only (Section 708.5).
Cybersecurity Mandate: If a COPS connects to a communication network for remote control, it must either be limited to a local non-networked interface or use a networked interface evaluated and certified for cybersecurity vulnerability (Section 708.7).
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Under Section 708.8, a listed Surge Protective Device (SPD) must be installed integral to or immediately adjacent to all COPS switchgear, switchboards, and panelboards. Transient voltage spikes are not an option here!
