⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Manufactured Buildings (Part 1 - Article 545) ⚡
Modular units, factory-built structures, and transportable buildings—welcome to Article 545! How does the National Electrical Code regulate buildings constructed off-site? Let's break down the scope! 👇
What Article 545 Governs:
The Manufactured Building Scope: Covers requirements for manufactured buildings, building components, relocatable structures, and conductors connecting relocatable structures to a power supply.
Manufactured Buildings vs. Manufactured Homes: Unlike manufactured homes (which are built on a chassis and covered under Article 550), manufactured buildings are constructed in a factory or assembly plant, transported to a site, and designed to be installed on a permanent foundation.
Factory Wiring Safeguards:
Listing Mandate: All raceways, cable wiring methods, and fittings must be listed.
Securing Cables in Closed Construction: In closed construction, cables are permitted to be secured only at cabinets, boxes, or fittings when 10 AWG or smaller conductors are used and physical protection is provided.
Service-Entrance Conductors: Generally must be installed after erection at the building site, unless the exact attachment point is known prior to factory manufacture.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always check the manufacturer's information sheet (typically located under the kitchen sink or on a closet wall) to verify the specific electrical codes and standards the modular unit was built to satisfy!
