⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Appliance Branch Circuits & Cords (Part 2) ⚡
Continuous load sizing, heater element subdivision, and specific appliance cord lengths—let's check Sections 422.10 through 422.16! 👇
SLIDE 2 (BRANCH CIRCUITS & CONTINUOUS LOADS)
Sizing Conductors and Heaters:
Continuous Loads: The branch-circuit rating for a continuous load appliance (other than motor-operated) must be not less than 125% of the marked rating.
Central Heating: Central heating equipment (other than fixed electric space heating) must be supplied by an individual branch circuit.
SLIDE 3 (OVERCURRENT PROTECTION & SUBDIVISION)
Subdividing Large Heaters:
Heater Subdivision: Resistance-type electric heating elements rated over 48 amperes must be subdivided into loads not exceeding 48 amperes, protected by supplementary OCPDs rated at not more than 60 amperes.
SLIDE 4 (FLEXIBLE CORD LENGTH RULES)
Cord Limits for Built-In Appliances:
Waste Disposers: 18 inches to 36 inches.
Built-In Dishwashers: 3 feet to 6.5 feet.
Trash Compactors: 3 feet to 4 feet.
Range Hoods & Microwaves: 18 inches to 4 feet on individual branch circuits.
SLIDE 5 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always double-check your built-in dishwasher and waste disposer cord lengths against NEC 422.16—too long or too short will fail inspection!
