Article 800 (Part 2 of 2)
Unlisted Cables, Entrance Conduit Grounding, Primary Protectors & Lightning Separation!
SLIDE 1 — Unlisted Cables Entering Buildings (800.48)
🚪 WHEN CAN UNLISTED OUTSIDE PLANT CABLE COME IN?
Unlisted outside plant comms, CATV-type coax, and conductive/nonconductive fiber cables are permitted in spaces OTHER than risers, environmental air ducts, and plenums, IF ALL of these apply:
1️⃣ Length inside the building < 15 m (50 ft) from the point of entrance
2️⃣ Cable enters from the outside
3️⃣ Comms cable terminates in an enclosure or on a listed primary protector
4️⃣ CATV coax terminates at a grounding block
5️⃣ Fiber terminates in an enclosure
SLIDE 2 — Extending the Entrance Point (800.48)
🔧 HOW FAR CAN YOU RUN IT?
🔹 Unlisted comms/CATV/fiber cables → the entrance point can be extended from the wall/roof/floor slab penetration by continuously enclosing them in RMC or IMC, with NO pull or junction boxes, to the point of emergence
🔹 Unlisted NONCONDUCTIVE fiber → can use PVC or EMT instead (no pull/junction boxes), outside risers/environmental air spaces
💡 The primary protector should be as close as practicable to the entrance point (per 805.90(B)) — so the cable shouldn’t run the full 50 ft inside if you can place the protector closer. It’s typically where unlisted outside plant cable transitions to listed premises cabling.
SLIDE 3 — Entrance Conduit Grounding & Primary Protector Circuits (800.49, 800.50(A)–(B))
🌎 METAL ENTRANCE CONDUIT GROUNDING (800.49)
Metal conduit containing entrance wire/cable must be connected by a bonding conductor or grounding electrode conductor to a grounding electrode (or the building grounding electrode system) per 750.100(B).
⚡ CIRCUITS REQUIRING PRIMARY PROTECTORS (800.50)
🔹 (A) Unshielded wires/cables from the last outdoor support to the primary protector must be listed per 800.2(A)–(C)
🔹 (B) On buildings →> 100 mm (4 in.) from light/power conductors not in raceway or cable (or a fixed nonconductor barrier). Where exposed to contact with power conductors over 300V to ground, support on glass, porcelain, or other insulation off woodwork (exceptions apply)
SLIDE 4 — Entering Buildings, Lightning Separation + Final Exam (800.50(C), 800.53)
🚪 ENTERING BUILDINGS (800.50(C))
🔹 Primary protector inside → enter through a noncombustible, nonabsorbent insulating bushing or a metal raceway (exceptions: metal-sheathed cable, through masonry, or fuses omitted per 742.10(A)(1), or extending circuits from a grounded metal-sheathed cable)
🔹 Raceways/bushings slope UPWARD from the outside — or form drip loops right before entry
🔹 Raceways need an approved service head; multiple comms cables may share one raceway or bushing
🔹 Metal raceways ahead of the primary protector must be GROUNDED
⚡ LIGHTNING SEPARATION (800.53)
Where practicable, keep> 1.8 m (6 ft) between lightning protection conductors and all comms wires/cables, conductive fiber, and CATV coax. (See NFPA 780 for sideflash calculations.)
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 800 (Part 2)
Q: Per 800.53, where practicable, what minimum separation must be maintained between lightning protection conductors and communications wires and cables on buildings?
A) 3 ft (900mm)
B) 4 ft (1.2m)
C) 6 ft (1.8m)
D) 10 ft (3.0m)
