SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Capacity & Wiring (Part 2 - Article 701) ⚡
Can you run legally required standby wires in the same raceway as normal building wiring? Let's check what Article 701 says about capacity, load management, and sharing conduit space! 👇
Sizing and Load Management:
Transient Loads: The system must have adequate capacity for rapid load changes and transient power demands.
Parallel Operation: The alternate source can operate in parallel with the normal source (like for peak load shaving) only if the required standby capacity is maintained at all times, with malfunction signals in place.
Sharing Raceway Space (The Big Difference):
Same Raceways Permitted: Unlike emergency wiring (Article 700) which must be kept entirely independent, Article 701 wiring is permitted to occupy the same raceways, cables, boxes, and cabinets with other general (normal) wiring!
Common Bus Rules: Feeders supplying both standby and non-standby loads must have common OCPD selectively coordinated with downstream devices.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Enjoy this wiring freedom while it lasts! While Article 701 lets you bundle standby conductors with normal general wiring, remember that emergency wiring (Article 700) still requires strict physical segregation.
