SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Electrolytic Cranes & Enclosures (Part 4) ⚡
How do overhead bridge cranes operate safely when lifting massive loads directly over energized reduction cells? Let's finish Article 668! 👇
SLIDE 2 (INSULATING CRANES & HOISTS) Isolating Overhead Equipment:
Not Grounded: Conductive surfaces of cranes and hoists entering the cell line working zone are not required to be grounded. The portion contacting energized cells must be insulated from ground.
Remote Control Safety: Crane controls must employ isolating/ungrounded circuits, nonconductive rope operators, pendants with nonconductive supports, or secure radio controls.
SLIDE 3 (NATURAL DRAFT VENTILATION ENCLOSURES) Preventing Gas Accumulation:
General-Purpose Enclosures: General-purpose electrical equipment enclosures are permitted inside electrolytic cell facilities where a natural draft ventilation system prevents the accumulation of hazardous gases (Section 668.40).
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
When servicing overhead cranes in electrolytic cell rooms, always verify that insulating links and nonconductive pendant controls are fully intact to protect operators from potential voltage transfer from the cell line below!
