⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Class III Cords & Crane Safety (Part 4) ⚡
How do you wire overhead cranes over combustible fibers? What are the rules for flexible cords and battery charging rooms? Let's finish Article 503! 👇
Dusttight Connections:
Flexible Cords: Must be listed for extra-hard usage, contain an equipment grounding conductor, be supported to eliminate terminal tension, and terminate in listed dusttight cord connectors.
Receptacles: Receptacles and attachment plugs must be grounding type, designed to minimize fiber entry and prevent spark escape.
Preventing Arc Ignition:
Isolated Power Supply: Power supplies to contact conductors must be electrically isolated, ungrounded, and equipped with a ground detector that sounds an alarm and automatically de-energizes conductors upon a ground fault.
Current Collectors: Collectors must have two or more separate contact surfaces and be kept free of lint accumulations.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Storage battery charging equipment in Class III facilities must be located in separate, well-ventilated rooms lined with substantial noncombustible materials built to prevent the entrance of flyings and lint!
