⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Material Groups & Temperature T-Codes (Part 2 - Article 500) ⚡
From hydrogen gas to grain dust, how does the Code categorize hazardous materials? Let's dive into Material Groups and Temperature Ratings! 👇
Grouping Flammable Gases & Vapors:
Group A covers acetylene.
Group B covers high-hazard gases and vapors with extreme explosion characteristics, such as hydrogen.
Group C covers intermediate gases and vapors like ethylene.
Group D covers common industrial gases like propane.
Grouping Combustible Dusts:
Group E covers combustible metal dusts including aluminum and magnesium.
Group F covers combustible carbonaceous dusts having more than 8 percent total entrapped volatiles, such as coal and coke dust.
Group G covers other combustible dusts including flour, grain, wood, plastic, and starch.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Equipment surface temperatures must never exceed the autoignition temperature (AIT) of the specific gas or vapor present. Always check your T-codes (T1 through T6) before installing gear in classified spaces!
