"Old building with cinder fill? Here's what the Code actually says."
Galvanized/stainless EMT allowed in cinder concrete/fill if: ✅ Covered by 2 in. (50 mm) of non-cinder concrete, OR ✅ Installed at least 18 in. (450 mm) below the fill [358.10(C)]
Wet locations: all supports, bolts, straps & screws must be corrosion-resistant [358.10(D)]
Steel/stainless EMT is permitted where subject to physical damage [358.10(E)]
Not permitted: severe physical damage locations, or supporting luminaires (except small conduit bodies) [358.12]
Dissimilar metals should be avoided to prevent galvanic action [358.14]
Quick Quiz: 1️⃣ How deep must EMT be buried under cinder fill (without noncinder concrete cover)? 2️⃣ Can EMT support a luminaire?
