SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Audio Output Wiring & Water Safety (Part 2) ⚡
Can you run speaker wires right alongside line voltage? How close to a swimming pool or hot tub can an amplifier be installed? Let's break down Sections 640.9 and 640.10! 👇
Matching Wiring to Listing:
Class 1, 2, or 3 Outputs: Amplifiers carrying audio program signals can use Class 1, 2, or 3 wiring only if the amplifier is listed and marked for use with that specific class of wiring method.
Audio Transformers: Impedance-matching transformers and autotransformers are permitted directly on amplifier and speaker terminals, and unlike power transformers, their common terminals do not require grounding.
The 5-Foot Pool Rule:
Branch-Circuit Powered Gear: Audio equipment supplied by branch-circuit power shall not be placed horizontally within 5 feet (1.5 m) of the inside wall of a pool, spa, hot tub, or fountain.
Class 2 Power Exception: Audio equipment powered by a listed Class 2 power supply or Class 2 amplifier is restricted only by manufacturer recommendations.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Some amplifier outputs are intentionally isolated from equipment ground to prevent ground loops and hum. Never assume an audio transformer common lead needs to be bonded to earth unless the manufacturer's manual explicitly mandates it!
