SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Sign Disconnects & Working Spaces (Part 2 - Article 600) ⚡
Where must a sign disconnect be located? How do you switch highly inductive neon transformers safely? Section 600.6 sets strict control and servicing rules. Let's break it down! 👇
Controlling Every Sign:
Complete Control: Each sign must be controlled by an externally operable switch or circuit breaker opening all ungrounded conductors, controlling no other load.
Location Options: Must be located at the point of entry to the sign, within sight of the sign (lockable if out of line of sight), within sight of the controller, or at an approved remote first-responder location with proper labeling.
Inductive Loads & Clearances:
Switch Rating: Switches controlling sign transformers must be rated for inductive loads or have a current rating at least twice the transformer current.
Working Space: Ballasts and transformers installed outside sign bodies require a dedicated working space at least 3 ft high × 3 ft wide × 3 ft deep.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
If a sign disconnect is located remote from the sign, it must be lockable open in accordance with Section 110.25, and a permanent field label must be applied to the sign identifying the disconnect's exact location!
