Slide 1 — Hook "Remember the Article 300 burial depth table? This one runs DEEPER — because medium/high voltage raises the stakes if someone digs into it."
Slide 2 — General cover requirements — direct burial
All locations not otherwise specified: 30" for 22kV or less, 36" for over 22kV-40kV, 42" for over 40kV.
Under a building: same 30"/36"/42" tiers (no reduced allowance like low-voltage's "0 inches in a raceway" rule).
Under paved streets/highways/roads/alleys/driveways/parking lots: flat 24" regardless of voltage tier.
In/under paved airport runways: flat 18" regardless of voltage tier.
Direct-buried cables not encased/protected by concrete need a warning ribbon placed at least 12" above them in the trench.
Slide 3 — Cover requirements — raceways (EMT/RTRC/PVC/HDPE/RMC/IMC)
Generally much shallower than direct burial: 18" (22kV or less) / 24" (over 22-40kV) / 30" (over 40kV) for most locations — but only for raceways specifically LISTED for direct burial without concrete encasement (other nonmetallic systems need 2" of concrete above the conduit, in addition to table depth).
Under a building or under 4"+ concrete with no vehicular traffic: just 4" across all voltage tiers.
Where qualified persons handle all maintenance/supervision: cover can be reduced 6" for every 2" of concrete (or equivalent) placed in the trench over the installation — except this reduction doesn't apply to RMC/IMC.
Solid rock blocking the required depth: use a raceway (metal or direct-burial-rated nonmetallic) with at least 2" of concrete down to the rock.
Slide 4 — Quiz + CTA Q: "Direct-buried medium-voltage cable rated 22kV or less, in a general (unspecified) location, requires a minimum cover of:" A) 18 in. B) 24 in. C) 30 in. D) 36 in.
✅ Answer: C — Table 305.15(A): 30 in. (750 mm) for direct burial at 22kV or less in general locations.
